TEN NIGERIAN DESIGNERS CHANGING THE NARRATIVE

By JAK - June 24, 2020

As a designer myself, seeing other designers shine is really something I look forward to. Our world has become a global village and as such everyone seems to be connected to the other one way or the other. This post is long overdue as I wanted to introduce you to Nigerian designers you might not have known about prior to this post.

The list was curated based on my personal preference and wasn't ranked using any indicators or specifications. It is easily just an extension of my knowledge and study of the brands in focus.

FRUCHE OFFICIAL

Fruche is one of those brands whose knack for innovation and forward thinking shines through every piece they release. The ingenuity shown in all their pieces makes them a force you cannot help but notice. Their designs are simply brilliant and as such you should definitely check them out.

IMAD EDUSO

If you didn't know this brand prior to now, then know that you just came cross a gold mine. The last time Hollywood actress, Lupita N'yongo visited Nigeria; She alongside Best selling author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie were spotted in one of their popular jumpsuits. The thing I love best about the brand is how they distinguish themselves by using a trademark fabric, Satin. You won't regret checking them out. They have the loveliest pieces.

KAI COLLECTIVE

Kai is a relatively young brand with a very unique selling point. They design their pieces with women of all sizes in focus. There is nothing more amazing than wearing a piece that makes you look absolutely sexy and fashionable regardless of your size. This is one area where KAI excels.

MAXIVIVE

Usually, I am all about defying norms and breaking fashion rules. With this brand, there are no rules and androgyny looks very beautiful on each and every piece. The design style here shows deep reflection and spectacular imagination.

STYLE TEMPLE

Style Temple has a very unique approach to design. The pieces here are nothing short of haute couture in a pret-a-porter mix. Every piece is a deliberate effort to make the wearer feel graceful and elegant. ST should be your choice if you want to dress in a show stopper.

LISA FOLAWIYO

Lisa Folawiyo had to make this list because what is a Nigerian designer without ankara. Lisa Folawiyo designs the most exquisite ankara pieces. She revives the ankara fabric using modern design technique. She is one brand that screams African with a twist. You should definitely check them out.

DENIKE ONLINE

Denike Online might seem like a new and upcoming brand but they have very lovely pieces. They are able to take the simplest of concepts and transform them into pieces that you definitely want in your wardrobe. They are also quite affordable and you will really love to be seen in a Denike outfit.

EMMY KASBIT

Emmy Kasbit is a trendsetter in every sense of the word. The designs are particularly show stopping and nothing you've seen before. The fabric choice  for most of their pieces makes them stand out even more. More than their excellent design and fabric choices, the conceptual analysis behind each piece makes you love them more.

ORANGE CULTURE

Somebody say "ANDROGYNOUS!"
Since I found out about this brand, I have been hooked. They are one of the biggest fashion brands changing the narrative in the Nigerian fashion scene. Orange culture makes the most extra ordinary pieces. If you don't know any brand, you should definitely know this one.

CLAN RTW

CLAN RTW makes stunning work wear. They design pieces for the powerful and ambitious woman. If you want to look strong and feminine at the same time, then this is your go to brand.

There you have it guys.
My ten faves changing the narrative.

I thought to add one extra amazing brand changing the narrative in swimwear design.

ANDREA IYAMAH

If there are designers you know that are changing the narrative but didn't make my list, please do leave their names or handles in the comment section. I would be over excited to do a part two so that we can learn together.

I am always available to talk to you or connect here on Instagram and here on twitter. Please, do reach out.

Till my next post,
All my love,
JAK.
